Help your child discover the joy of learning

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the joy of learning. And learning is a joyful activity when children are given the opportunity to progress at their own pace, challenged by lessons and educational materials designed to meet their individual needs.

We seek to make the child's school days a foundation for a lifetime of creative learning. To help each child achieve academic excellence, we use individualized lessons. And we offer a warm and caring environment where children can learn cooperation and respect for others.

In our educational efforts, we seek to support parents as they respond to the needs of the whole child--developing personal values and inner strength for the challenges of the diverse and changing world in which we live.

What makes Concordia unique?

  • We are a warm and welcoming community: a place where children find friendships and support, and parents are actively involved in their child's education.
  • We are about developing physical, social and intellectual competency: lessons are carefully designed to teach specific skills and concepts your child is ready to learn.
  • We learn from one another: mixed age groupings foster confidence and independence; classes integrated by age, sex, ethnicity, race and religion create a community in which we learn, play, work and celebrate together.

Is the Montessori approach at Concordia different?

When you visit different Montessori schools, you might think you're looking at different kinds of Montessori. What you're really seeing is how Montessori practices are responsive to a community of parents, teachers and children. This flexibility explains why Montessori schools are so widespread; they are found on every inhabited continent. In the U.S. there are thousands of independent and public Montessori schools, each reflecting its own community and historical roots.

Dr. Maria Montessori, an anthropologist and the first woman physician in Italy, left us a legacy of hands-on learning materials that foster scientific and mathematical aptitudes, nurture an appreciation of history and support the creativity of every child.

By attending a Concordia school tour, you learn about our Montessori community and how we tap into her legacy to meet the needs of today's children.

For more than 25 years, the skilled and sensitive teachers of Concordia School have been creating a place to learn how to learn. . . which at the same time engages the imaginations and intellects of young children. To accomplish this, the Concordia School offers three education programs to take advantage of the unique learning potentials of different age groups:

In the Children's House small faces are lifted in delight as the butterfly they watched emerging from its chrysalis takes off into the sky.

In the Junior Elementary garden, voices call out excitedly, "I found another one!" "Look over here!" as students add another roly-poly to the habitat they have created.

In the quiet beauty of Yosemite, Advanced Elementary students culminate their study of geology, as they observe firsthand the impact of glaciers upon the valley.

Wandering together, grounded by the structure of the environment so carefully prepared by their teachers, Concordia's children enjoy an endless adventure. As their teachers and parents, we delight in their odyssey and regain a piece of our own childhood, as we see the world through their "new eyes".

In eager anticipation of the many discoveries we will make together, the faculty of the Concordia School welcomes you to another school year.

With warm regards,

Kathryn Linzey, Head of School
